You enable them in the item purchase menu and they seemingly appear randomly while enabled

That goes against the spirit of the roguelike genre whilst it simultaneously fits with the spirit of chess as Metylene elucidated above: you need to make a choice, even if it's a bad one.

I noticed a similar and significant decline in FPS while running my Archer's Wand/Broken ring fit with probably 14 mana across 6 mana stones.
